| Dec-Jan | Hertford had appointed Hopton as his general
of horse and they tried to recruit in Dorset and Somerset without much
success. Hertford sailed to Wales to raise forces there while Hopton
rode on to Cornwall. Hertford recruited regiments of foot and moved on
through Worcester to Burford in the Cotswolds. Bristol, Gloucester and
Cirencester were all held by Parliament and Hertford was cut off from
his troops in the South-West.
