Dec-Jan Hertford had appointed Hopton as his general of horse and they tried to recruit in Dorset and Somerset without much success. Hertford sailed to Wales to raise forces there while Hopton rode on to Cornwall. Hertford recruited regiments of foot and moved on through Worcester to Burford in the Cotswolds. Bristol, Gloucester and Cirencester were all held by Parliament and Hertford was cut off from his troops in the South-West.

Newcastle in the North was occupied fighting Fairfax.

The Royalist command consisted of three areas - 
  • The North : commander-in-chief William Cavendish, Earl of Newcastle; 
  • The South-West : commander-in-chief William Seymour, Marquess of Hertford;
  • The Centre : commanded by the King.

 

Jan 6 Rupert left Oxford to join Hertford.
Jan 19 Braddock Down Royalist victory for Hopton.
Jan 21 Parliament decrees that the forces of Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Hampshire be 'formed into a body'. The South-Eastern Association is formed. In fact, Surrey opted out choosing to defend itself.

Royalist attempt to relieve Reading is thwarted at Caversham Bridge.

Parliament appoints the Earl of Manchester as commander of the armies in the Midlands. His orders are to prevent Newcastle's advance on London.
