Forced Loans
A 'gift' of money to the King, which the loyal subject gave...or else!

Also called a 'benevolence'...as the person who gave it did not get the money back!

King Charles I tried to use forced loans to raise money for his war with France...but this upset a lot of people who then refused to pay. Some important people were imprisoned (see the Five Knights) and some lesser men were given a hard time by their council lieutenants or had soldiers forcibly billeted on them.

This was one of the grievances cited in the Petition of Right in 1628.
