Countrymen disillusioned by the war and exasperated by the
high taxes, the plundering of property and forced billeting of soldiers,
formed themselves into an association called the Clubmen. They did not
take sides in the war and their purpose was to defend their homes their
land and their families.
Armed with clubs (from which they took their name) scythes and
pitchforks etc they generally took a battering when confronted by
soldiers of either side. |
Their only uniform was a
white cockcade and their banners were inscribed with the motto
'If you offer to plunder
or take our cattle,
be assured we will bid you battle'.
