Devizes 1645
Sep 21 Ten cannon are set up in the market place of the town aimed at the castle held by the Royalist governor Sir Charles Lloyd. Cromwell summons the castle to surrender but Lloyd declares his intention of holding the castle 'til the death of the last man.

 

Sep 22 Cromwell's bombardment of the castle is carried out until well into the night when a shell lands in the powder magazine killing a number of men. The garrison soon afterwards agrees to surrender.

Parliament decides that the remains of the castle were to be demolished.
