Entry of the New Model Army into London 1647
Aug 3 Fairfax draws up the New Model Army on Hounslow Heath. There are some 15,000 men lined up and this is not just a show of strength but a display of discipline.

The two Speakers, fourteen peers and about a hundred Members of Parliament review the troops.

A deputation from the City is received. They state that they do not wish to fight.

Aug 4 The troops parade round the outskirts of the city. Not a single shot is fired. The gates of the city are opened.
Aug 5 The army marches into the city.
Aug 6 Fairfax escorts the MPs back to Westminster. The church bells ring and the men wear laurel leaves in their hats.
Fairfax is appointed Constable of the Tower of London.
Aug 7 Fairfax parades all the regiments in Hyde Park before marching on to Cheapside and into the streets of London. The troops are greeted well by the citizens who are impressed by the discipline - in contrast to the mobs of reformadoes a couple of weeks before.

The army marches on to Croydon.
