Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Manchester
1602 Born in Kimbolton, the son of Henry Montagu, 1st Earl of Manchester. Portrait of Edward Montague
1618 Studied at Cambridge.
1623 Feb 6. He married Susan Hill, a cousin of the Duke of Buckingham, in the King's (James) Bedchamber.

Went with Prince Charles to Spain on his quest for a bride.

1624 Sat in the Commons as MP for Huntingdon.
1625 Jul 1. Marries his 2nd wife Lady Anne Rich.
1626 As Lord Kimbolton (Viscount Mandeville) he entered the House of Lords.
1634 Apr 25. His son Robert was born.
1635 His daughter Frances was born.
1638 His daughter Anne was born.
1640 Signed the 'Petition of 12 Peers' demanding a parliament when the King had dissolved the Short Parliament.
1641 Leader of the Puritan faction in the House of Lords. He was Pym's greatest ally in the House of Lords.
1642 He was the only member of the Lords who was impeached by the King along with 5 MPs.

He obtained command of a regiment and fought at Edgehill.

Nov Succeeded his father as the 2nd Earl of Manchester.

Dec 30. Married his 3rd wife Essex Cheeke.

1643 Presided over the trial of Edmund Waller.

Promoted to Major-General and commander of Parliament's Eastern Association army in August.

Sep 16. Captures King's Lynn.

Oct 11. With Fairfax and Cromwell, he defeated the Royalist cavalry at the Battle of Winceby.

Oct 20. Lincoln surrenders to him.

1644 May 6. Storms and takes Lincoln.

Jun 4. He leads the EA army to join the siege of York

Jul 2. Participated in the Battle of Marston Moor

Sep 8. Arrives at Huntingdon.

Sep 22. Arrives at Watford

Sep 29. Arrives at Reading.

Oct 19. Joins Waller's Western Association army  at Basingstoke.

Oct 27. Failed to capture Shaw House at the battle of Newbury. He allowed the Royalist defenders to flee and refused to give chase.

 

 

 

Nov 25. He was denounced in the Commons by Cromwell but no further action was taken. Cromwell charged him with 'his aversenes to engagement... his neglecting of opportunityes and declineing to take or pursue advantages...'
1645 Resigned his command in accordance with the Self-Denying Ordinance.
1646 Involved in forming the articles of peace.

In charge of the Great Seal.

1649 Opposed the trial and execution of Charles.

He became Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. (until 1651)

1650 He was deprived of all his offices after refusing to take the oath of loyalty to the Commonwealth and retired from public life.
1659 Jul 15. Married his 4th wife Eleanore Wortley.
1660 He carried the Sword of State at the coronation of Charles II and was appointed Lord Chamberlain, Knight of the Garter, a Commissioner of the Great Seal, etc..

Restored as Chancellor of Cambridge University.

1667 He was made a general and raised an army to fight the Dutch.

Jul 31. Married his 5th wife Margaret Russell, Countess Carlisle.

1671 Died on May 7th at Whitehall.
