Oct 13 Charles sends Digby and 1500 men including Langdale's horse northwards to attempt to join up with Montrose in Scotland.
Oct 15 Digby surprises the infantry of Poyntz's Northern Association army at Sherburn-in-Emlet and captures most of it.

Subsequently however, Colonel Copley's Parliamentarian horse turn defeat into victory with a cavalry action which sends the Royalists fleeing all the way to Skipton Castle with the loss of all their baggage.

The remnants of this Royalist army later reach Dumfries where they hear discouraging news about Montrose's army. They turn back south. The men desert Digby along the road to Cumbria and Digby and his officers find a boat at Ravenglass to carry them to the Isle of Man.
