| Ship Money |
|
|
|
Another cause of grievance against Charles I....
The King had no Parliament to raise money through taxes - he had
dismissed it in 1629. Ship money was a tax levied for naval defenses -
initially only on coastal cities but later it became a more general form
of taxation. |
|
| 1634-36 |
October 1634 - The first ship money writ appeared. There was
one each year and successively extended the number of people who had to
pay it. The 1636 order was for all counties to pay it.
Financially effective but a political disaster!

|
| 1637 |
John Hampden refused to pay ship money. His case lasted six
months..and he lost (7 votes to 5) and was fined! |
|
| 1641 |
The Long Parliament declared ship money illegal. |
