Types of Network
A network consists of a number of computers linked together.

Advantages of Networks :

  • peripherals (eg printers) can be shared
  • software can be shared
  • data can be shared
  • computers may communicate
  • security - user access may be restricted if needed

Disadvantages of Networks :

  • one server breaking down may affect a number of computers
  • vulnerable to hackers and viruses
  • cabling and installation may be expensive
  • a network manager may need to be employed to run the network
A LAN (Local Are Network) - the computers are on the same site and linked by cables.

A WAN (Wide Area Network) - the computers are on different sites and are linked by telephone links. A computer may need to use a modem to link to the telephone system.

Some LANs now use wireless links.

A WAN can cover a whole country (or even the world!).
Peer-to-peer networks All computers are of equal importance. Software and data are stored on each computer.
Client/Server network Software and data are held on a file server and may be used by other computers on the network.

Security is controlled centrally.

Exercise : Types of Network
A network consists of a number of computers .

LAN stands for . Computers are linked by cable.

WAN stands for . Computers are linked by telephone.

If one computer has software and data for other computers to use, then the network is a network.

If all computers run their own software and store their own data then it is a network.
